Ways to Make Money While Abroad
Many people don’t travel or live abroad for long periods of time because they think that they need to have a large stash of cash saved up to live off of. However, thanks to the Internet and a little ingenuity, more and more expats are finding themselves with viable means to make money while seeing the world.
Teaching English Abroad
If you have a bachelor’s degree in any field, then you’re more than likely qualified to teach English as a second language just about anywhere in the world. No teaching experience? This usually isn’t a problem as long as you’re willing to adapt quickly to your surroundings and have an open mind to new experiences.
There are many online resources and listings available that connect potential teachers with schools. Another method is to teach English online using Skype as an independent contractor or to work one on one with people once you get into the country.
Freelance Online
The Internet has made it possible to make money online from anywhere in the world. Some basic jobs include being a virtual assistant, writing and editing articles, and selling items online. However, if you have a niche or specialty, another option is to become a professional consultant for others. Between email and Skype, you shouldn’t have a problem staying in touch with your clients.
It’s smart to establish your online business first before leaving your home country to ensure that you like it and can make enough money to sustain yourself.
Global Work Search Engines
If you prefer a more traditional route, you can always look for a career through a database like Monster.com or Indeed.com. These search engines allow you to apply for jobs and careers in the location of your choosing.
Obviously, if you plan to do a lot of moving around, this option won’t offer the same flexibility as some of the other ways to make a living, but it can provide substantial stability, especially if you plan to live abroad with a family. Depending on the job, you may even be able to get some or all of your relocation costs covered.
Wing it
As much as we’d like to prepare for the road ahead, sometimes the best way to secure a job when abroad is to actually be abroad and talking to people. This is especially true if you plan to relocate to more rural areas.
