Diving and Snorkeling in Curaçao
If you enjoy snorkeling in crystal clear waters or diving through reefs and underwater landscapes the right destinations for you is Curaçao.
There are many places you can explore and it all depends on what you are looking for: marine life, deep dives, snorkeling, wrecks, Curaçao has something to offer to everyone. So here are a few of the many places to go and enjoy your underwater vacations:
Barracuda Point is located across the channel from Barbara Beach and is named after the numerous barracudas whose natural habitat is in these waters. While diving here you will probably be followed by a few of these guys, but they are just curious and won’t harm divers..
If you like deep dives, Diver’s Leap is the perfect place for you. It is a steep wall dive and the wall is covered in corals and has an abundance of deep-water fish.
If you like shipwrecks you have to dive at the Superior Producer site. The Superior Producer sank in 1977 due to rough seas and shifted cargo and was towed to the north side of the harbor entrance just off the coast of Otrobanda. You can reach the site by shore or boat and it is suitable for beginners as well as advanced divers.
Another wreck to visit is the Airplane Wreck at Santa Martha. The site is marked by a buoy. The airplane is an 80 passenger Fokker Fairchild 27 which was left at Curaçao’s International Airport after its last flight and was donated in 2006 by the Fire Department to All West Apartments & Diving and Ocean Encounters West. After getting all permits for the sinking of the plane it was taken to its actual resting place.
A perfect site for snorkelers and divers alike is the Tugboat in Bayas. This little boat sank 25 years ago and rests at a depth of 5 meters. It is a great site to take pictures and offers a lot of diving choices.
For advanced divers Hell’s Corner is the perfect spot. This dive site doesn’t have any protection from the open ocean and it is fully exposed to ferocious trade winds so large waves crash against the huge rocks on the shore which gives justice to its name. But once you are diving here you will admire the mushroom and brain corals, gorgonians and tube sponges as well as the abundance of fish like barracudas, sea turtles, the green and spotted moray eels, schooling jacks, lobsters and many more.
If you always wanted to experience what it is like to be stranded on a deserted island, you have to visit Klein Curaçao, a 1.7 square kilometres uninhabited island south-east of Curaçao. It can be reached by boat and divers can enjoy its coral and underwater caves as well as the colourful fish and sea turtles.
The Light Tower site is located southeast of Habitat Resort. You can only reach it by boat and the rough waves that are a regular feature make it quite challenging to make the entry and exit. Apart from barracudas and tuna you might catch a glimpse of dolphins playing and hunting in this area. Different kinds of corals and sponges make the dangerous dive worthwhile among them the elephant ear coral.
There are much more sites in Curaçao for diving and snorkeling and people in the numerous dive schools and resorts will be happy to provide you with further information.
