Costa Rica Voted Greenest Place to Vacation
The studies just keep on coming and I feel like Yale University or the Environmental Index is getting funds under the table from Costa Rican bloggers like myself or the Tourism industry like myself. I promise to be fair though and lay it out for you like it is.
Yes, it is true Costa Rica was voted the greenest place to pick for your next ecotourism vacation according to a study done by the Environmental Index that gave Costa Rica a combined score of 69.03. This is great because now maybe I can sell more Costa Rica vacations but as somebody who really loves this country and the people in it I look deeper into such awards. I really have no idea what this award means other than Costa Rica has planted 5 million trees in 5 years, they use a lot of clean and renewable energy, and their tourism industry concentrates a lot on the environment.
Fortunately for the study they do not take into account Costa Rica’s relationship with the Chinese and the fact that China is opening up a new coal plant every other week to meet their energy demands for production of anything and everything for countries like Costa Rica. Fortunately for the study they do not take into account the 250,000m3 tons of untreated sewage that is dumped into the Virilla river which ends up in the Tarcoles River which is now the most polluted river in all of Central America. Yes, the crocodile bridge where tourist stand and look at the crocodiles are simply a dumping pit of all the bathroom waste from the over 1 million person population of the Central Valley. The good news is that their is a new sewage system plant that will cost a quarter of a billion dollars and is expected to treat all sewage before entering the rivers. The time frame is for 2015 and is a much needed step for the “Green” & ”eco-friendly” country of Costa Rica.
Yes, over 25% of the country is in pristine untouched immaculate shape ready for tourist to come be inspired by it’s beauty but the real goal is that Costa Rica needs to have a balance of being the greenest country for tourist and also being the greenest country for it’s own people. The sewage system will be a big step forward in a goal I know the Tico’s will fight for in being the greenest country on the planet for tourist & locals alike.
